Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
