No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Drive
At least six people have lost their lives during a stampede at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in the West African nation.
The midweek "devastating" event appeared to have been triggered by "a sudden rush of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a release from Ghana's armed forces.
22 others were hurt, among them five who remain in critical condition.
Thousands had turned up at El-Wak stadium, in the capital, the capital, with the hope of enlisting in the military.
The country has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such enlistment drives normally attract large crowds and often result in chaotic scenes.
The closing date to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had experienced challenges in the application procedure.
Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the stampede occurred before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the wounded in medical care.
Order has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has now begun.
