Everyone Are Encouraged to Be the Fourth Haim Sisters Sister.

"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to start a band."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That recent toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
