A Moving Moment as Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

'It's a key moment which recognizes a young, black English manager.'

"Rosenior represents an excellent tactician who knows the game intimately, which is the most important thing.

"But, as Chelsea's first black player, I would be lying if I said this moment fails to move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by Paul Canoville, the man who earned his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

This week, Chelsea hired Strasbourg manager Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

Statistics show only twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he knows this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever children see someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, a person they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… it is powerful and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is a massive moment for the club, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's inaugural African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League boss of colour.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout English football corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023's report, 43% of top-flight footballers are from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, research by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, based on data provided by eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea manager, and we hope to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of ability present within black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to persist in work hard to dismantle those obstacles down."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time British managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's remaining major leagues in terms of national representation.

16 of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are Italian, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany while 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating to young English coaches in the system to witness an individual land that job with his background and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

Liam Rosenior

Liam Rosenior becomes Chelsea's second black coach following in the footsteps of Ruud Gullit.

It is vital to remember – his appointment is due to ability'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for his services to tackling inequality in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability arguing that roles should be given on merit.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast under-representation leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", but said he understood the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to follow him with a move from France to West London this summer.

In further Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "ashamed" upon hearing a coach utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's pioneering African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.

Elliott later held multiple executive roles, including the Football Association's equality board|
